“If you’re told to be a sheep, you will have a hard time acting like a lion.”

February 26, 2013

“If you’re told to be a sheep, you will have a hard time acting like a lion.” Following the idea behind this proverb, LIONS OF SCIENCE e.V. promotes and awards East African students who have innovative scientific ideas that improve standards of living. Home-grown solutions and scientific creativity – this is what the German-Kenyan organization and internet platform is on the lookout for.

The Lions of Science organization annually awards prizes to East African students aiming to assist them in tapping into the full potential of their projects and help them enter the market. Awards include prize money of up to €1,500, consulting on the further development of solutions, language courses and internships.

Who can take part? Currently, all enrolled college and university students in Kenya can submit their ideas in various scientific categories including Natural Sciences, Environment, ICT/Media, Health, Indigenous Knowledge and Engineering. The submitted projects are assessed by a jury as well as through public online voting. The presentation of awards will take place for the first time in Nairobi in July 2013.

But Lions of Science aims at much more! By presenting the scientific spirit and innovative creativity of young scientists and their home grown solutions, it contributes to highlighting the dynamic changes taking place on the African continent. It is this side of African reality – the side not sufficiently covered by the media – which will inspire and encourage young people. Inspire them to act like “true lions” in the pursuit of science.
