November 04, 2013

Technology helps. In developing and emerging countries, simple technical solutions adapted to existing conditions offer huge potential for positive social, environmental, and economic change.

The “empowering people. Award” aims to find and provide such solutions and products and help extend them to others to be used as effectively as possible. The award honors serviceable technical solutions in the fields of Water & Waste Water, Energy, Health, Living & Construction, Food & Agriculture, Waste Management & Recycling, and Information & Communication Technology.

Engineering and development professionals have compiled a shortlist of the 23 best technical solutions from more than 800 submissions received by January 31, 2013. An international senior-level jury of economic, science, and development cooperation selected the top three winners:

First Prize: OneDollarGlasses, Germany
Second Prize: MakaPads – Sanitary Pads, Uganda
Third Prize: Jompy Water Boiler, U.K.

The Community Prize went to: Solar Reflectors, Mexico

The Awards Ceremony took place on October 30th 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya. The day before all winners participated in the “Empowering People Workshop” together with members of the Community Impact Development Group (CIDG).
