The Members of our Jury: Klaus Töpfer

August 20, 2013

With immense experience in the field of Sustainability, the Siemens Stiftung is proud to have Professor Klaus Töpfer on the “empowering people. Award“ jury. As the Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam and having held the position as Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme in Nairobi, and Under Secretary General of the United Nations, Professor Töpfer is in an ideal position to evaluate the entries to the Award. Commenting on the competition, Töpfer stated:

“As a member of the jury, I look forward to the many good ideas submitted to the Award by inventors from around the world. The high number of 800 submissions shows that straightforward technical solutions do exist for the many problems in basic supply in emerging countries. The impact should go well beyond the improvement of fundamental living conditions if the solutions are embedded in entrepreneurial activities and the respective societal structures and capacities are strengthened. “

Professor Töpfer has received numerous honors and awards including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990 and the German Sustainability Award in 2008. He was also inducted in the Kyoto Earth Hall of Fame in 2012.
