It is a hybrid solution containing last-mile Wi-Fi network, local cloud and satellite communication in a single unified product. The core of BLUETOWN’s solution is a solar-powered base station with satellite transmission that establishes a Wi-Fi hotspot large enough to cover a village. The technology has a widespread application in the developing world where internet access is hampered in remote locations. BLUETOWN’s LOCAL CLOUD provides easy and affordable access to local digital content and services at no data cost to the end-users. Consumers access content through Wi-Fi internet hotspots and browse through content they wish – data free! They get easy access to information and knowledge within health, learning, agriculture, entertainment and local news. A significant part of the world’s population live in areas without internet connectivity. In large chunks of the developing world, particularly those in rural and remote areas, there is a huge internet connection deficit. In these areas, high internet infrastructure costs and low population density have led internet service providers to shy away from developing internet infrastructure in these areas. Existing technologies are too expensive and not designed for rural areas, consequently keeping people unconnected. This threatens to exacerbate existing socio-economic inequalities, as the unconnected face chronic gaps in information, education, markets, financial and health services and to government programs.

They offer last-mile connectivity, providing rural communities fast and easy avenues to e-learning, e-health, e-governance, agriculture and financial inclusion. End-users pay a relatively low price for internet data consumption while local data as well as local communication are free. It has 800 sites in rural India that facilitate financial services, even when internet credit is consumed. Students in rural public schools in Tanzania are now learning good English through localized educational videos.

It has a strong team spread across geographies including former senior executives of Nokia Denmark and other industry experts in its ranks with both technical and business acumen. The social enterprise creates new business models through innovative, multi-stakeholder partnerships with major telecom providers and investors by supplying new technological solutions.  

BLUETOWN’s simple solar-powered base station can be deployed without the use of power tools and by non-technicians. The system works by letting digital content providers upload content to a central server, from where the content is distributed to local servers in the target locations to reach rural populations. It enables lowering of the cost of the transaction of activating the content, reduces the necessity of physical presence in remote areas to broadcast and provides intelligent content distribution to target groups with data statistics and analytics. This model is scalable with potential for impact as the nature of the solution is critical in the development of emerging economies and the uplifting of individuals out of poverty.
