The Hippo Water Roller aims to alleviate the daily struggle of women and children by helping them to easily transport more water at a time from water points located far from their homes.
The Hippo Water Roller is the most efficient and appropriate technology to achieve this purpose and is well established in those communities which have been lucky enough to benefit from this project.
Instead of being carried in a 20 l bucket on the head, the weight of the water remains on the ground in a drum. A steel clip-on handle allows the women and children to roll the drum by either pushing or pulling it, depending on gradients.
Compared to a bucket, the Hippo Water Roller allows 5x more water to be carried home. As an additional benefit, it saves time and while women can use it for other household tasks, children can attend school more often, resulting in better education.
Basic hygiene and health can be significantly improved and long-term injuries from carrying heavy weights are prevented.
The durable design ensures a lifespan of 5 to 7 years and often even longer, depending on prevailing conditions. The maintenance-free design - no consumable parts - ensures sustainability and long-term success in remote locations.
"A smarter way to collect water."
According to the World Bank 2,8 billion of the 7 billion people on earth live in areas of high water scarcity. Daily, millions of women and children are forced to carry heavy loads of water in containers balanced on their heads for long distances to their homes.
Designed by South Africans, the Hippo Water Roller has proven to help communities carry water to their homes far more easily and efficiently than traditional methods. Assisting these communities with this simple technology empowers them, resulting in many immediate benefits.
The Hippo Water Roller
• Reduces the physical injuries caused by carrying heavy loads of water;
• Saves many hours a day allowing time for other important tasks;
• Has a positive effect on hygiene and health;
• Gives people more time for education and for other economic activities;
• Started positive cultural changes, as men started to help collecting water with this technology;
Additionally, it has had a positive effect on the work of many NGOs that have been more successful in achieving their particular goals and objectives.
Our preference is to partner with existing community-based organizations and NGOs for implementation and feedback.
