SABAQ Learning Apps

“Sabaq” means “lesson” in Urdu, the official language of Pakistan. SABAQ is also the name of an education tech initiative from Pakistan that developed the same-named applications software to offer access to quality education, even in remote regions where there are no schools. The learning apps aim to increase student engagement and improve learning outcomes through sound digital content that is fun to learn and easily scalable, making it accessible to millions of children. The use of technology should support teachers and facilitators to establish a solid level of education among pupils from grade 1 to 5 and thus reduce the high dropout rates witnessed in the country.

All the content is created by SABAQ’s team of academic experts who bring experience from Pakistan’s top private schools. The content is brought to life in the form of quality instructional videos (stories), exercise and flipbooks and can be used in both formal and non-formal education set ups. So in a typical SABAQ classroom or learning center, students are seen absorbed in the lessons on tablets. The material is available in English, Urdu and other local languages.

About 20% of the global out-of-school children of primary and lower secondary school age are just in Pakistan alone. Critical gaps exist in the quality of education provided in public and low-cost private schools. Those who are still enrolled in public schools are mostly at risk not achieving grade-level skills due to poor quality of public schools, inadequate teachers’ capacity and outdated educational content. This crisis needs a solution that is scalable, replicable and provides standardized quality of education. SABAQ is a social enterprise that has risen to the challenge and leveraged technology to offer education to both in and out-of-school children to help them develop grade-level skills. SABAQ has also built offline versions of its apps to facilitate schools and learning centers with no internet access.

SABAQ is also the only organization in Pakistan that has 500 EdTech (Education Technologies) non-formal learning centers in rural areas where schools are either too far away or inactive. In these centers, facilitators merely support the learning process. With respect to these centers, a third-party assessment of SABAQ’s impact was carried out. It resulted in 3 times and 2.5 times improvement in learning outcomes in Math and Urdu respectively among children using SABAQ compared with those who didn’t use it during the test period.

Prior to introducing the content, teachers and facilitators are required to undertake a training on teaching with technology provided by SABAQ. The application software can be used on any device based on Android. In most cases, the apps run on android tablets with a life span that can go up to 4 years. So the need for spare parts is only pertinent to the device it is running on. There is no maintenance demand for SABAQ’s solution. All content is created by their in-house team of highly capable academic experts, animators and illustrators, and software developers.

SABAQ is a low-profit company. The combination of the business model, approach, and design of the solution is uniquely poised to give the company access to a niche market, like grade 1 to 5. Besides, SABAQ intends to move into the lower grades to encompass Early Childhood Development (ECD) material as well.
